UPNS 124 Cultural Issues in Health Care

This course introduces models of transcultural health care and the interplay between models of transcultural care and other models of clinical application of culturally appropriate interventions.

Details: 

 

Spring 2019, 2020: Taught three lectures on Ayurveda to third-year nursing students with a focus on general concepts about the doshas and how they can be kept in balance. Each student completed a dosha questionnaire in advance so they could tailor the lecture to their health from an Ayurvedic perspective.  Also, gave a guided breath and meditation (trataka) practice to help students maintain balance of the mind.  Class size: 50 students..

 

Fall 2020: Taught one lecture on Ayurveda to second degree nursing students. with a focus on general concepts about the doshas and how they can be kept in balance. Each student completed a dosha questionnaire in advance so they could tailor the lecture to their health from an Ayurvedic perspective.  Also provided samples of culinary herbs (trikatu) that could be incorporated into one’s diet to enhance assimilation and digestion of food.  Class size: 122 

UPNS 495 Foundations of Holistic Nursing Practice

Spring 2021: This course, which is designed for nursing students interested in utilizing holistic principles and understanding evidence-based modalities in professional nursing practice and who are preparing to become board-certified in holistic nursing, exposes students to knowledge about the state of the science in holistic care, the most current research on the efficacy and safety of a variety of complementary and integrative health modalities (CIHA), with self-care and stress management incorporated into it.  I taught a 3h section to 30 students (nursing and pharmacy students) on Ayurvedic theory that included guided self-care practices of dinacharya, dosha balancing using herbs, essential oils, meditation and breath practice.  

 

Nursing School:  GPNG 917 Transcultural Care and Global Health Perspectives

The purpose of this experiential was to provide an 8h observational experience with a non-traditional or non-Western system of health to Doctor of Nursing Practice students

Pharmacy School:  Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiential (APPE) rotation

The purpose of this site is to offer 6th year Doctor of Pharmacy students the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of Ayurveda and holistic approaches to managing disease using evidence-based research. The ultimate goal is to create awareness to pharmacists and the field of pharmacy on the use of herbals to prevent disease and improve quality of life.
